[Footnote 198: Christian Prince, later Christian VIII. King of Denmark and, _de jure_, of Norway (1786-1848), succeeded to the throne of Denmark on the death of his cousin, Frederic VI., in 1839. In 1814, when Norway was ceded to Sweden by the Treaty of Kiel, he was proclaimed King of the former country, with the title of Christian I., by the Norwegians, who refused to accept the union with Sweden (May 1814).
